Audrey Jean Carroll

December 12, 1925 — March 12, 2020

Audrey Jean Carroll, age 94, was born in Newburg, New York on December 12, 1925 to the late David and Katherine Gilchrist. She leaves behind her children, Kimberly Carroll, Christopher (Debbi) Carroll, Nancy (Joseph) Szabo, and Candace Shauger and her partner Don Grimm; Her Grandchildren, Andrew, Jenna, Kirsten, Jeffrey, Megan, Richard, Chris, Trisha, Brian, Conor, David, Corey, Richard, Phillip, and Katherine; Greatgrandchildren, Tommy, Jake, Gavin, Zander, Zachary, Jesse, Liam, James, Jonathan, Sean, Sienna, Parker, Sophia, Severin, Sydney, Violet, and one future player to be named. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Katherine Hawkins and her husband, Elmer “Buck” Carroll.

Audrey was an avid bridge player, a New York Times crossword puzzle aficionado, a devout Catholic, and a sports fanatic. She was a fan of the Chicago Black Hawks (hockey), Washington Redskins (football), and the World Series Champion Washington Nationals (baseball). Whether she was the den mother for cub scouts or the cheerleader at the local horseshows, Audrey spent her life dedicated to her children and grandchildren. She was skilled at intelligent conversation, wisdom and grace, and the many kindnesses that came from being an excellent mother.

A typical menu could include the following dishes: Sherry Stew, Creamed tuna on toast, SOS, chili with nuggets of chili powder, and the finest thanksgiving meals that a family could ask for.

Audrey’s life was spent in service to others, an attribute that she instilled in every one of her children. She worked as a registered nurse for 38 years, from 1947 until her retirement 1986. She graduated from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1947, and began her occupation as a nurse at the Fort Hamilton VA Hospital in New York. She married and raised five children and resumed her career in Newport News, Virginia. She continued until her ultimate retirement in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. She traveled throughout the US with her husband, “Buck”, through Europe, with her sister Joyce, and through the UK, with her daughter and granddaughter, Kat.

Audrey was a woman who will always be remembered for her wisdom, grace, faith, and devotion to her family.
