Loa Ransom

November 19, 1936 — February 26, 2022

Loa Ransom, 85, of Galena, OH, passed away on February 26, 2022. Loa was a devoted mother and grandmother with a passion for learning and a dedication to serving others. Kindness, curiosity, intellect, and faith provided the foundation for a lifetime of growth and engagement. After raising her family, Loa returned to school full-time to fulfill her goal of earning a college degree. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 1990 and worked as a certified medical technologist until her retirement from OSU Hospitals in 2000. Throughout her life, Loa was an active volunteer in her church and community. She assisted with church fundraisers and congregational care, delighted in teaching pre-K Sunday school and VBS, and was a 4-H leader, den mother, PTA officer, and classroom volunteer. For over 20 years, Loa assisted people in crisis through HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties (formerly Help Anonymous), earning recognition as Volunteer of the Year in 1994 and 2004 for her service on the board and as a hotline volunteer and member of the Sexual Assault Response Network. She was an avid walker and enjoyed travel, yoga, golf, trapshooting, jigsaw puzzles, and Galena G&T get-togethers. Loa grew up in Gambier, OH, and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1954. Loa will be greatly missed by her sisters Beverly Sherman and Jeanne Gruver; daughters Jane (Jay) Arrington and Betsy (Dave) Bender; grandchildren Jacob (Abby) Bender, John Garrison, Katy Bender, and Katie (Nathan) Lyons; great-grandchildren Lacey and Lucas Bender; and dear nieces and nephews. Loa joins loved ones who preceded her in death, including her cherished son John H. Ransom, close friend and former husband John J. Ransom, and parents Mary and Dell Hathaway.
