Virgil Lawson

June 12, 1938 — May 13, 2020

Columbus

Our father Virgil Lawson, age 81, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, at 10:35 PM, May 13, 2020 at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio.  He fought a long, hard battle with stage four lung cancer but passed away due to sepsis in his bloodstream that was caused by the cancer.

He was born in Elk Valley, Tennessee, and was preceded in death by his parents, Flem and Eva (Baird) Lawson; brothers, Roy, Allen and Jim; sisters, Maryann and Izora; nephews Mack, Tommy and Robbie.

Virgil leaves behind a brother, Tom Lawson; children, James, Wanda Lawson Stanley, and Evelyn Lawson; grandchildren, Juanita Stanley, Derek Lawson, Jason Lawson, Janae Lawson, Jada Haddock, Cameron Siders, Jonathan Whiting and Evan Whiting; He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren.

Virgil was a no nonsense, to the point type of man.  He had a hard exterior but could have a gentle soul at times, when needed.

He served in the U.S. Navy, entering at the early age of 17 serving in Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Bonita (SSK3 type submarine) and the USS Carp (SS 338 type submarine) during his tour of duty.  Virgil went on to become a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He owned two construction companies throughout his life.  The construction business was one of his greatest passions.  He loved to read and absolutely loved gardening and his flower beds.  Virgil had flower beds every year and his favorite flower was a yellow rose.  Liver and onions was his favorite meal and Run Silent, Run Deep was his favorite movie.  Virgil’s mother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian and although being Cherokee, he was a lover of all Indian Nations.  Virgil donated to the St. Joseph’s Indian School located in the Sioux Nation of South Dakota.

He loved his family and friends and adored his dogs, Hut, Pizza and Whippet.  He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.  Our lives will be different without him.

We love you dad, watch over us as we continue our journey here on earth.  Until we meet again, you will always be loved and never forgotten.
